In honour of Women’s Month, FAnews, on behalf of Gauteng Women in Insurance (GWII), caught up with Kyndra Robertson, President of GWII, to hear her thoughts on empowerment, leadership, and the continued journey of women in the insurance industry. Here, she shares a heartfelt message of inspiration for all GWII women this Women’s Day.
A Q&A with Kyndra Robertson
Women have the strength to challenge the status quo. What barriers do you believe still need breaking, and where should our focus lie-both now and looking ahead?
We need to keep pushing for better representation in female leadership, equal pay, and more inclusive workplace cultures where women can lead authentically. The focus should be on creating space – not just seats at boardroom tables – but meaningful space where women are heard, supported, and celebrated for their unique strengths.
In your view, what will be the most significant challenge facing the next generation of women leaders? One of the biggest challenges will be navigating the pressure to “do it all” while maintaining balance and well-being in both career and personal life. Despite our progress, many decision-making tables still lack diversity. Young women leaders may find themselves advocating not just for themselves but for others coming behind them. That’s why building strong support networks is crucial spaces where women can learn from those who’ve gone before them and feel empowered to lead authentically. Leadership should never come at the cost of joy or identity. For women aspiring to lead-what guidance or words of encouragement would you offer?
Don’t wait for the perfect time or permission – start where you are. You’re more capable than you think, and your unique perspective is your superpower. Surround yourself with people who see your potential and never dim your light to make others comfortable. The phrase “women who support women are more successful” has gained momentum. What’s your perspective on the power of women uplifting one another?
I wholeheartedly believe in the power of women supporting each other. I’ve experienced moments where a simple word of encouragement from another woman changed the course of my confidence or decision-making. When we lift one another up, it creates a ripple effect far beyond that single interaction. Success doesn’t need to be a solo journey-we’re stronger and more impactful when we rise together. In your opinion, what does it truly mean to be a woman in the 21st century?
It means embracing every facet of who we are – unapologetically. We are ambitious professionals, nurturing mothers, supportive partners, resilient leaders, and passionate individuals – all at once. Being a woman today is about having the freedom to define success for ourselves and making choices that align with our values. It’s about using our voice, even when it shakes, and extending grace – to ourselves and to each other. Why is it essential that women’s voices are not only heard, but amplified, in today’s world?
Because women bring a wealth of perspective, empathy, and lived experience that’s often missing in decision-making. When women are truly heard, teams become more inclusive, and solutions reflect the real world. I’ve seen how powerful it is when women speak up and lead – those ripples are felt in our workplaces, communities, and industries. We can’t afford to silence or sideline those voices.
What message would you like to share with the remarkable women working across our industry?
To all the incredible women in our industry – your presence, your work, and your persistence matter. Even on the hard days, you’re making a difference. The way you show up, support others, challenge norms, and lead with heart is inspiring. You might not always see the impact, but trust me – it’s there. Keep showing up, just as you are.
Lastly, do you have any closing thoughts or inspirational words to leave with us this Women’s Month?
This Women’s Month, I’m celebrating the strength, resilience, and brilliance of women everywhere. It’s a moment to pause and recognise how far we’ve come – and a reminder to keep going. Let’s challenge the norms, create space for others, and continue lifting as we rise. There’s incredible power in our stories, in our support, and in our leadership. When we come together with courage and compassion, we’re truly unstoppable.
