Gauteng Women in Insurance (GWII) is pleased to announce that Velene Peters has assumed the position of GWII President for 2026.
On behalf of Velene and the GWII Committee, we extend our gratitude to Kyndra Robertson, the 2025 GWII President, for her dedicated leadership over the past year. Her hard work and contributions as President have been deeply valued and will be remembered with appreciation.
Stepping in as the new President, Velene tells us about herself, how she came to join the GWII, and why she believes she is suited to the role.
For those who may not know you, could you share a bit about your professional journey and how you became involved in the insurance industry?
In 2020, I co-founded Charter Risk Underwriting Managers, out of a desire to make a meaningful impact in the short-term insurance industry – a field deeply rooted in my family’s legacy. I’m passionate about talent development and education, and I’ve always believed in actively investing in people’s growth and success. Through Charter Risk, we have built a people-first organization known for empowering employees and creating opportunities for previously disadvantaged individuals.
Before that, I had a successful career in the fashion and retail industry as a Fashion Buyer for top retail groups such as Edcon, JD Group, and John Craig. My expertise spanned categories from childrenswear to menswear, accessories, and apparel.
The analytical and commercial skills I honed as a buyer now play a vital role in driving strategic growth and innovation at Charter Risk Underwriting Managers.
What drew you to the GWII initially, and what has kept you engaged over the years?
Gauteng Women in Insurance is more than just a professional association – it’s a movement committed to advancing women in the insurance industry and empowering them to reach their full potential.
This mission deeply resonates with me.
I initially joined GWII to grow my personal network and quickly discovered the value of its events, which bring together incredible women from across the industry. The sense of purpose and connection has kept me engaged ever since.
How would you define GWII’s purpose and its role in the broader insurance landscape?
GWII exists to create an environment where women thrive professionally and personally-through strategic networking, thought leadership, educational events, and leadership development programs.
Our work is not just about hosting events; it’s about driving a movement toward equality, empowerment, and excellence in the insurance industry.
Through our thought-leadership events – which welcome both men and women – we also emphasize the critical role men play in advancing gender equality and supporting the ladies in the industry.
What aspects of your background or experience make you feel prepared to take on the role of President?
I have spent much of my career in senior leadership roles, guiding teams toward ambitious goals. I lead with a clear vision and a commitment to servant leadership – uplifting others as a way of driving collective success.
This year, I look forward to working closely with our committee to advance the GWII’s mission and ensure that women in our industry feel supported, empowered, and celebrated.
From your perspective, what key traits should a successful GWII President possess?
A successful GWII President should:
- Lead from the front when action is required.
- Lead from behind by empowering the team to excel.
- Have clarity of vision and the drive to achieve it.
- Work tirelessly toward meaningful objectives.
Are there any fresh ideas, programs, or developments you hope to champion during your presidency? What impact do you hope to make?
I am thrilled to announce our Women on Boards program – designed to equip women who are new to boardrooms with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to excel in these roles.
This program will help female leaders understand board dynamics, seize new opportunities, and navigate their fiduciary responsibilities with confidence.
It’s a step toward ensuring women have a strong voice in shaping the future of our industry.
GWII stands for both professional growth and community. Which area -personal development, peer support, or industry advancement – resonates most with your leadership approach?
Peer support resonates most with me. When women feel supported, they can test their limits, rise after setbacks, and break the proverbial glass ceiling.
Looking ahead to the coming year, what exciting plans or events can members expect from GWII in 2026?
Members can expect:
- Strategic networking events
- Thought-leadership sessions
- Leadership development workshops
- Motivational talks from industry leaders
- Vibe & Ventures social experiences
- A focus on women’s health
- And, of course, a year-end celebration to remember!
Is there a final message you’d like to share with the GWII members?
Ladies, this is the year of #SheLeads!
- #SheLeads even without a title.
- #SheLeads with intention, love over ego, peace over pride.
- #SheLeads by choosing dignity over drama, grace over grudges.
- #SheLeads by being present – offering time, energy, and heart.
- #SheLeads by setting a powerful example of strength, empathy, and authenticity.
- #SheLeads unapologetically, whether loud or silent.
- #SheLeads when she falls and rises again.
- #SheLeads when she ignores “impossible” and shatters ceilings – for herself and those who follow.
What words of encouragement or inspiration would you like to leave with GWII members as you take up this new role?
Embrace this year’s theme – #SheLeads.
Lead at home, at work, and in the boardroom. Use your influence to create lasting change. Lift others as you rise. Show others they can shine-knowing that their light will never dim yours.
Step boldly into your greatness.
“There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.” – Michelle Obama
