“The industry needs your voice, your leadership, and your perspective.” A Women’s Month message from Darryl Grater, Chief Growth Officer, Discovery Insure

As we celebrate Women’s Month and gather for the Gauteng Women in Insurance (GWII) Women’s Day event, Grace, Grit and Growth: A Season to Bloom, we extend our sincere thanks to our Platinum Sponsor, Discovery Insure, for their valued partnership.

Partnerships like this create meaningful spaces for leadership, empowerment and connection within the insurance industry. We appreciate Discovery Insure’s commitment to uplifting women and driving positive impact across our sector.

In his message to GWII members, Darryl Grater, Chief Growth Officer at Discovery Insure & Vitality Drive International, speaks to a defining moment for our industry.

A powerful shift in leadership

“Across the insurance industry, a powerful shift is underway,” he notes. “Women are not only participating – they are reshaping how leadership is defined, how decisions are made, and how value is created.”

This shift is more than symbolic. It is structural and cultural. It is bringing “fresh perspectives, stronger collaboration, and a deeper connection between purpose and performance.” Leadership is being redefined – not by hierarchy alone, but by influence, empathy and impact.

His message to the women driving this transformation is both clear and compelling: “Continue to step forward with confidence and conviction – the industry needs your voice, your leadership, and your perspective. Real progress depends on those who challenge convention and expand what leadership looks like.”

Grace, grit and growth: what this season demands

The theme of this year’s event reflects the qualities required to sustain this momentum.

“‘Grace, Grit and Growth’ reflects what this moment demands,” Grater explains. “Grace to lead with authenticity and empathy. Grit to navigate barriers, persist through complexity, and challenge the status quo. And growth – not only individual advancement, but the intentional lifting of others and the evolution of entire organisations.”

Grace speaks to values-based leadership. Grit speaks to resilience in the face of systemic barriers. Growth speaks to legacy – ensuring that progress is not individual, but collective.

Importantly, growth is not accidental. As he reminds us, “A ‘season to bloom’ is not accidental – it is built through sustained action, shared responsibility, and a commitment to doing things differently.”

From commitment to accountability

Discovery Insure remains a proud main sponsor of the GWII Women’s Day event and is committed to supporting meaningful progress toward a more inclusive and equitable industry. Yet, as Grater emphasises, lasting impact requires collective accountability.

“Real and lasting impact requires collective commitment,” he says – and identifies three priorities.

First, expand access to opportunity. “Leadership pathways must be intentionally opened – through sponsorship, mentorship, and deliberate development into critical roles.” Talent must be actively championed, not passively acknowledged.

Second, create environments where people can thrive. “Inclusion must go beyond representation to ensure every voice is heard, valued, and able to influence outcomes.” True inclusion enables participation, contribution and advancement.

Third, drive accountability. “Progress must be measurable and visible, with leaders held responsible for delivering real change.” Equity must be tracked, reported and embedded into leadership performance.

These are not abstract ideals. They are practical commitments that move diversity from aspiration to execution.

As we reflect on Women’s Month and its significance, we are reminded that progress is strongest when it is shared. “To every individual shaping this future: the impact is real, and it is lasting. Together, there is an opportunity to build an industry defined not only by performance, but by equity, inclusion, and long-term impact,” concluded Grater.
